In a virtual press conference this morning, the Newcomer Education Coalition has launched their State of Equity in Education detailing inequities in Manitoba's Education System.
Please download the full report.
Key findings of the Report include:
- Underrepresentation of Newcomer and Racialized persons on school boards in
Winnipeg
- Underrepresentation of Newcomer and Racialized teachers in schools in Winnipeg
- Underrepresentation of Newcomer and Racialized students in the faculties of education
The guiding principle of the Report is based on the belief that in order for the educational
outcomes to improve for Newcomer and Racialized students, they must see themselves better reflected in the curriculum and teaching staff in their schools.
Further to this, NEC states that the decision-making process is flawed when the voices of
Newcomer and Racialized persons are missing when program deliberation and policy decisions are made.
